Exhibition – birds

Over the last couple of months I have been working on a new range of work based on children’s drawings focussing on how they see our surrounding wildlife. The below images are some of the birds I created. There are many more to come!

Its been such a fun project to get involved in and I have throughly enjoyed every moment of it.

Little Artists needed

Riley Rabbit

Some very EXCITING news!

At the end of july I have my first solo exhibition. It is very exciting but also very scary. There is still so much to do!

Inspired by the New Forest (and with the creative minds of children) I am creating a collection of artwork that brings children’s drawings to life.
Using a combination of knitted and stitched fabrics, each child’s drawing is reproduced in fine detail to retain it’s childish character and imaginatively bring it to life. The textile artwork of children’s drawings illustrates the story that i have been writing for the last couple of months about a bird flying through the forest and the friends he meets on his journey.

Without Children this exhibition won’t be possible. I am looking for children of all ages to help with this project and draw pictures of animals that live in the forest. I want any animals!

If you would like to get involved please email me on laura@lauralong.co.uk and I will send you the details.

I look forward to hearing from you

Angel on the tube

Last night something very exciting happened….. I was on the way back from our Cockpit Arts Christmas party and spotted my angel advertised in the tube station. Not just any tube station, OXFORD TUBE!

A few little Angels.

A few examples of some of the Angels I have made so far. They are all so different. What I love most about them is that you can really see the child’s personality coming through. They have all been so much fun to make.

Look what dropped through my letterbox this morning? The www.notonthehighstreet.com Christmas catalogue….and on page number 14 is my little Angel decoration.

They made her look amazing!

Picture books

As a child I loved picture books. I have strong memories of our reading hour in Primary school. I’m sure it wasn’t an hour but as a slow reader unless I had a short book, it felt like a very long time!

The stories I chose were books with minimal text, books with beautiful pictures and books with an interesting cover. I loved Quentin Blake, Shirley Hughes and Judith Kerr. In fact I still love their books and illustrations.

After we had finished reading we had to write a bit about the story then illustrate it. The shorter the book, the more illustrations I could fit in – my favourite part.

My niece is nearly two and loves books. She will sit on the floor blabbering to herself while she turns the pages then when she sees a picture she likes, she kisses it.

I have had a story in my head for about a year so now (in my time of change and aim to do something new) it seems the right moment to finally bring this story to life and finally put the words and illustrations on to paper.

Will a bit of knitting and sewing be involved in this strory? of course.

The Angels are getting a little bit of fame.

A few weeks ago I was told by www.notonthehighstreet.com that my Angel was being considered for their Christmas advert. I was asked to make several identical Angels. I’m not sure why they needed so many, but I made them straight away and popped them in the post just minutes before I headed off for a mini break to Cornwall.

Everything went quiet and I thought they must have decided to choose other products instead of mine. I try not to get excited about things like this as more often than not nothing comes of it….. BUT this week I had confirmation that my Angel will be used.

My little personalised Angel will be in the www.notonthehighstreet.com Christmas advert!!! (it does’t seem real)
